Curious individuals constantly ask how long it takes to sculpt a piece. My answer is usually "it depends". There are some sculptures you see in your minds-eye and have motivation that wells up and you just complete it quickly. There are other pieces that take years to sculpt. I try to recognize my limits as an artist. The human figure is one of those things that I will continue to work at for the rest of my life. Children's faces and the female body have such soft features that they are difficult to duplicate and capture accurately. A figure (pictured here) is my "learning" piece. It has sat on my sculpting table for years, literally. I'm not sure if it will ever be finished, but I see it as a learning experience, my own personal school and tutor. It's helped me to appreciate the process, observing the subtle lines and curves and how best to capture them. I enjoy learning, but at the same time I am a perfectionist and impatient. This piece has helped me to relax and slowly come to terms with my limits and teaching me at the same time.
